The Rock Vinyl Revival (2006-2018)
The modern vinyl revival began in the mid-2000s, with steady growth starting around 2006. Those of us that grew up with it were used to the tactile experience of holding an album, flipping through liner notes and the ritual of playing a record. While I had always kept my vinyl collection, it was great to see it being rediscovered.
Several factors contributed to this resurgence, including a renewed interest in analog sound quality (warmth and richness), the rise of indie music culture, renewed interest in the record shop and a sense of nostalgia for physical media in the digital age. The revival included both new release and reissues which catered to new collectors who wanted that high-quality, remastered analog sound.
Retail Support appeared in the form of Record Store Day in 2008, becoming a critical event in the vinyl revival. Exclusive releases and reissues available only at independent record stores on this day attracted collectors and younger listeners alike, providing a major boost to vinyl sales.

In December 2011, BBC Radio 6 Music began an occasional Vinyl Revival series in which Peter Paphides met musicians who revealed, and played selections from, their vinyl record collections.
By the mid-2010s, vinyl had become a dominant part of the music industry again, with sales hitting milestones each year. This revival was sustained by a mix of reissues of classic albums and new releases by popular artists. Pink Floyd’s The Endless River became the fastest-selling UK vinyl release of 2014.
So MoR Revisited has asked itself the question “What were the biggest and best rock and metal albums from that period?” Here’s our list and we even made a playlist of the best racks too:
